Clay has a vast native integration with numerous tools such as HubSpot, Clearbit, Hunter, Apollo, Prospeo, People Data Labs, and more. You can plug your account from those tools into Clay using an API key. 

Before you use Clay’s prebuilt integrations for data enrichment, you must first connect your account to the tool. In this case, we choose Prospeo, an email finder and verifier.  

Here is a simple workflow that shows how to connect Prospeo’s API key to Clay. Log in to your Prospeo. Click “Account” >> “API.” The API key is displayed on the screen. Copy it. You should have something like what’s in the screenshot below.

Then, hop over to Clay. In Clay’s dashboard, navigate to “Settings” >> “Connections” >> Add connection. Search for the tool you want to connect. In this case, we search for “Prospeo,” and it displays the menu as shown below. Type in your preferred name and paste the API key you copied from Prospeo earlier.

  1. Select a Clay’s table. 
  2. Click “Add enrichment” >> “Integrations”

  5. Under “Select Prospeo account”, select the API key you’ve earlier named.

  1. Log in to your HubSpot account in Clay to access more features. 
  2. In your Clay dashboard, open a table. You can import your lead list as a CSV file or directly from HubSpot.
  3. To import directly from HubSpot, navigate to Actions >> Import Objects from HubSpot. Note that this works with the paid plans.
  4. Select the object you want, usually Contacts. You can also choose Companies, Deals, or Custom objects depending on your workflow.

  • In your Clay table, click “Add enrichment” and search for “HubSpot.”
  • Select “Update objects” from the options. 
  • Configure the settings. Select the correct object type, like “Contact.”
  • Map the HubSpot Object ID to identify the records that require an update. 
  • Enable “Ignore blank values” if necessary.

This will push the Clay data back to the corresponding records in HubSpot.   • End point: The specific part you want the API to act on (e.g.,/user)
  • HTTP methods: The type of request at each endpoint (e.g., GET for retrieving data, POST for creating, DELETE for removing, and PUT/PATCH for updating)
  • Authentication requirement: how to prove identity (e.g, API key, OAuth tokens, etc).
  • Other specific information, such as request body formats, response structure, error code, messages, and more.

1. Click “Add Enrichment” and search for “HTTP API.”

2. Select “HTTP API” and click “Configure.”

3. Scroll down a bit and input the relevant fields. Add your API account. Then, enter the HTTP method and select any of the options, whether GET for retrieving data without making any changes, POST for creating something new, DELETE for removing items from the system, and PUT/PATCH for updating existing information.

 4. Input the URL of the API endpoint you want to communicate with. That is where your request will be sent, allowing Clay to interact with the server.

5. Remove empty fields from the request

Before sending your request, clean up any field that doesn’t have a value. Many APIs will reject blank fields or interpret them incorrectly. So, only include what you need. 

In Clay’s case, when you toggle the “Remove empty value” button, you’re telling the system to drop any field that has no value (empty field, null, undefined) from the request before sending it to the API. This is exemplified in the red box of the screenshot below:

6. Enter query string parameter

Input any query string parameter in your API request. This is commonly used for filtering or refining results, especially for search criteria.

7. Enter the JSON body for the request

Specify the kind of data you want to input in the required field. This is crucial for POST and PUT requests, where you’re creating or updating data. This data must follow JSON rules, which include:

  • Strings (letters/words/text) go inside double quotes (e.g., “city”: “London”)
  • Numbers are written without quotes (e.g., “age”: 29)
  • Booleans don’t require quotes. Just true or false (e.g., “status” = false)
  • Null values are written as null without quotes (e.g., “fullname” = null)

Please note that APIs are strict. If you put numbers or booleans inside a quotation mark, they will treat it as a string (letters/text), not as actual numbers or booleans. And if there’s a mismatch in the input data and what they expect, there would be an error.

8. Headers

Headers are key-value pairs of metadata that provide additional information about the request beyond what’s in the URL or the request body. They help the server understand and process the request correctly. Common API headers include:

  • Authorization: They prove your identity (e.g., API key or Bearer token)
  • Content-Type: They tell the API what format your request body is in (e.g., content-type: application/json)
  • Accept: They tell the server what to expect back (e.g, accept: application/json)

9. Define the field path to return

This allows you to filter results by specifying the kind of response you want to retrieve. If the response has lots of data and you need specific fields, you can filter out unnecessary responses. 

10. Auto-update and conditional run

This element automatically updates itself when you add a new row. You can toggle it off, but be careful about stale data. Additionally, you can run enrichment under specific circumstances. Input formulas to run columns if the formula is true.

11. Custom rate limit

This lets you control the number of API requests you can send within a given timeframe. Specify the number of requests in the “Request Limit” field and set the given time in milliseconds in the “Duration (in ms) field.

Example: Connecting to Debounce via Clay’s HTTP API

As mentioned earlier, Clay’s HTTP API is great for integrating tools that don’t have native integration with Clay yet. One of these tools is Debounce, a tool we use to validate catch-all emails. 

Here is a breakdown of how to do this.

  • Visit the Debounce API documentation to get all the details. 
  • Include the Method, e.g., GET, to retrieve the data. Add the endpoint (similar to a URL) and Query parameter as shown in the image below.

  • Leave the toggle button to “Retry on failure” turned on. Once you’re done, click “Save,” and it will validate the catch-all emails. 

What are Clay API endpoints, and how to use them?  

If you’re wondering, “Does Clay have its own API?” The answer is no. Unlike other tools, Clay doesn’t offer a traditional public API you can use to query its internal data. But you can use the tool in a clever workflow. View the Clay API endpoints as a point of interaction where data is received, processed, and sent elsewhere. 

Take, for instance: 

  • You import lead lists from Apollo or HubSpot. This is where the workflow begins. 
  • Then, you enrich the contacts with a valid email address or run an HTTP API call to look up the email host (Your data gets processed).
